Mexico and Serbia to play for 9th at WU20 World Championship

 

Leon, Mexico, Saturday 20, 2019 - Spectators from Mexico and Latin America converged at the Domo de la Feria to witness the classification matches at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship.

11:30 Egypt vs. Rwanda – 15/16th place
15:00  Cuba vs. Dominican Republic – 13/14th place
17:30 Mexico vs. Serbia – 9/10th place
20:00 Argentina vs. Serbia- 11/12th place

In the first match on Saturday, Cuba got a 3-1 (20-25, 25-11, 25-13, 25-15) win against Egypt. The African Champions were motivated from the first point and won the first set against Cuba. In the next sets, however, Cuba came back into the game to take the advantage. The best scorers were Zeina Elelemy with 13 points for Egypt. For Cuba, Ailama Cese (12) scored 16, followed by Ivy Vila (25) with 14. Tomorrow the Caribbean team will play for the thirteenth rank.

The Dominican Republic defeated Rwanda 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-21). The African team earned cheers from the audience for their will to play volleyball. The best scorers were Flormarie Heredia (1) with 12 points for the Dominican Republic and Olive Nzamukosha (11) with 10 for Rwanda. The Dominican Republic will play for thirteenth place against Cuba, another Caribbean classic to look forward to.

Mexico’s ticket to the match for the 9th place came after a spectacular comeback 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-12, 15-10) win over Peru. Grecia Castro (14) and Melanie Parra (16) scored 22 points each for Mexico, followed by their captain Uxue Guereca (1) with 21. For Peru, the top scorers were Kiara Montes (11) with 16 and Flavia Montes (7) with 10.

The last ticket for the 9th place game was won by Serbia who defeated Argentina 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19). Serbia's consistency helped them win the match against Argentina, who had some ups and downs during the game. Bianca Farriol (11) with 16 points and Berenice Almeyda (18) with 12, were the best scorers for Argentina. For Serbia, Veronika Djokic led with 22 points.
