Serbia, Argentina and Mexico victorious at Women´s U20 World Championship

 

Leon, Mexico, July 18, 2019 - Serbia, Mexico and Argentina progress to the next round after claiming two victories in their groups. Tomorrow Peru and the Dominican Republic will play to join the 9th to 12th position bracket at the FIVB Women's U20 World Championship.

Serbia and Rwanda played the first match of this Wednesday at Domo de la Feria in Leon, Mexico. The European team got the win 3-0 with identical scores in all three sets (25-12, 25-12, 25-12). Rwanda had a good block, but Serbia with their experience were able to move the ball in order to score. Olive Nzamukosha of Rwanda and Jovana Cvetkovicof of Serbia were the best scorers with 11 points each.

After 1:10 hours of play, Mexico got a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-15) victory against Egypt, who were fighting for every point until the end. Uxue Guereca and Zeina Elelemy scored 14 points each for Mexico and Egypt. Mexico with this victory will play the matches for places nine to twelve.

Argentina were highly competitive and defeated Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21) in their encounter. The Caribbean team also showed fatigue after last night’s five-setter against Cuba. Argentina were focused on the game and committed only a small number of errors. Sol Salinas, outside hitter of Argentina scored 17 points for her team with 16 spikes and 1 block. Madeline Guillen, Natalia Martínez and Geraldine Gonzalez were the best scorers for the Dominican Republic with 12 points each.

In the last game of the day, Peru defeated Cuba in straight sets 3-0 (27-25, 25-13, 25-20). Cuba tried to react in the first set, but Peru were determined to win the match. Peru had some mistakes that reduced the gap between both teams, but with determination they managed the situation. Kiara Montes of Peru was the best scorer for Peru with 13 points. For Cuba, Ailama Cese scored 16 points.
